Desert Skies United Methodist Church, Tucson, Arizona

Rev. Daniel David Hurlbert - Pastor
Rev. Dan was born and raised in Phoenix. He attended, and eventually joined, Creighton United Methosdist Church. When he was a boy, his family, including two sets of grandparents and one set of great grandparents, also attended Creighton. He got used to and is still most comfortable in a church filled with folks from all generations. He was educated in the public schools eventually earning a B.S. in communications from Arizona State University. Upon graduation, he moved to Claremont, California where he earned his Master of Divinity and also met his wife, Rev. Susan Root. Susan, who grew up in Southern California, is ordained in the Disciples of Christ and is a certified Spiritual Deirctor.

Rev. Dan has worked steadily since his sixteenth birthday when he got a job as a shoeshine boy at the Arizona Country Club. The lessons he learned shining shoes still help him today. While in seminary, he worked at Brea United Methodist Church doing youth ministry and evangelism. He also worked in the Mudd Theater on the Claremont campus as theater manager and audio visual technician. Desert Skies is his third full-time appointment. He served as the associate pastor at the United Methodist Church in Prescott for about six years. He has been the Campus Minister of the U of A for the last four years and eight months, during which time he also served as associate at First UMC Tucson.

Rev. Dan and Susan do not have children, but they love them and are as active as they can be in the lives of their nieces and nephews. They have both been active in Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis communities, teach Disciple Bible and Christian Believer and enjoy contemplative prayer. Their non-church related interests are, in no particular order, Broadway musicals, Diamondbacks baseball, NASCAR, and most things that carry the name "Disney".

In many ways, Rev. Dan and Susan are partners in ministry. The faith they share is a vital part of their marriage and Susan is extremely important to Rev. Dan in his daily life and ministry.

Rev. Dan and Susan's personal mission is to help each person achieve his or her own God-given potential by facilitating a deeper personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. His personal theology of worship is that each worshiper should experience the presense of the risen Christ during the service. "Jesus told us that when we gather in His name that He is with us and I believe that with all my heart. At my very core is the desire to have you feel the reality of His presence so that you can go into God's world and help others feel it too".

"Susan and I are thrilled with the opportunity to be in ministry with you. We look forward to the chance to get to know all of you. We are already thanking God for the blessing that we know you will be in our lives, and the mission of Christ's church that we have the privilege of pursuing together".
